The international bodybuilding competitions provide beginning at the end of the 1940s, because the tournament is held where the first Mr. Universe which will be held in the city of Philadelphia, Steve Stanco to be the winner takes place in 1947. The following year the first Mr. Universe of the National Amateur Body Building is performed in London.
The term “Mister” was suspended in 1972 by decision of the International Federation of Bodybuilding, IFBB and now represents official sport so bodybuilder. The term was replaced by the more sporty “Championship” which is closer to the spirit of this activity.
Also, beginning in 1965 had competitions for professional bodybuilders, celebrating the first Mr. Olympia which was sponsored by Weider Jose. In this competition the winner was Larry Scott that with the passage of time has launched the careers of men like Arnold Schwarzenegger or Lee Haney.
Back in Spain in 1965 is celebrated the first championship in Madrid, participating bodybuilders who came from various regions of the country and won by Amalio Lasheras. While the first championship of Spain was celebrated in 1969 in Gerona where was proclaimed champion the sportsman Baldo Lois.
For competitions bodybuilding women had to wait a few years and in 1977 an American promoter from Ohio State held the first race of “women trained with weights”, where she won the trophy the gymnast Gina La Spina. The first female bodybuilding world championship was held in 1979, being the clerk Lisa Lyon.
By 1980 women’s bodybuilding achieves greater importance and notoriety when Joe Weider created the Miss Olympia, which was won by Rachel McLish, bringing the Professionalization of the women in this sport.
In 1982 take place in Madrid and Barcelona the first women’s competitions, where winners are devoted Mari Carmen Rey, Paula Doncel and Paloma Ramos, while Spain’s first female championship was held in 1983, being the winner on that occasion Paula Doncel.
